Case Study
Confidential — current engagement
A high-volume Shopify e-commerce business needed to bring their public site into WCAG 2.1 AA conformance — addressing both the underlying theme (where most accessibility issues originated) and the visual accessibility layered throughout the catalog.
The Result
Custom Shopify theme overhaul plus site-wide visual accessibility remediation — bringing a high-traffic e-commerce store into confident WCAG 2.1 AA territory.
About the Client
A high-traffic direct-to-consumer Shopify retailer with a substantial product catalog and a national customer base. Every page is exposed to the everyday reality of customers with disabilities trying to shop — and, in the current legal climate, to plaintiff-side testers and automated accessibility scans as well. Client identity withheld; the engagement is active.
01 / The Challenge
Where they were
before us.
The site's accessibility issues sat in two places at once, and neither could be fixed by an overlay widget. The first was the underlying Shopify theme — color contrast across product cards, keyboard handling on filters and modals, focus management throughout checkout, and missing or non-semantic markup in places that visual users never noticed. The second was the visual accessibility layer applied across hundreds of product and category pages — alt text on meaningful imagery, contrast in promotional banners, accessible form labels on the catalog filters. Both layers had to be addressed, and neither could be patched at the page level; they required a theme-level overhaul and a systematic visual remediation. Overlay widgets, which the team had considered, were ruled out as ineffective and increasingly viewed as aggravating factors in litigation.
02 / Our Approach
What we
actually did.
Comprehensive accessibility audit — automated scanning across product, category, and checkout flows, combined with manual keyboard-only testing and screen-reader walkthroughs on representative pages
Custom Shopify theme overhaul, rebuilding the underlying templates on a properly accessible foundation — semantic markup, keyboard handling, focus management, ARIA only where genuinely needed
Site-wide visual accessibility remediation — color contrast across every interactive state, focus indicators that meet AA, alt text on meaningful imagery, accessible form labels, motion controls on auto-advancing components
Coordination with the client's compliance posture — alignment with their counsel on documentation, accessibility statement language, and remediation cadence
Ongoing maintenance partnership — quarterly automated scans, accessibility-aware feature reviews, and a re-test cadence so the site doesn't drift back below conformance
03 / The Solution
What we
delivered.
A Shopify storefront whose accessibility posture matches the standard the law and the customer base both increasingly expect. The theme overhaul addressed the structural issues no widget could touch; the visual accessibility work covered the catalog-level details; and the ongoing maintenance partnership keeps the site from drifting as new features and content ship. The engagement is active, and out of respect for an active client relationship we don't publish identity, scores, or specific numbers — but the work is real, durable, and exactly what we'd recommend any high-traffic e-commerce business in 2026 should be doing.
04 / The Results
The numbers.

Shopify theme rebuilt on a properly accessible foundation
Visual accessibility coverage across product and category pages
Maintenance partnership preventing accessibility regression
